Setting the pop-up triggers

Pop-up is a window that appears to the visitors when they perform some action on a site — mainly after the trigger action you've set (for example, click on a button, scroll a page, or just open a site). With pop-ups, you can promote your business, engage a new audience, and get more leads.

After adding a pop-up on your site, go ahead and set up a trigger action for it to open on your live site. On Weblium, you can configure the settings for its display — how it will appear on the site, on which pages it will be displayed, and so on.

Before you begin:

Pop-ups usually interrupt visitors' experience on the page. Therefore, we recommend you to mind their quantity and think carefully about their purpose.
Stick to the overall site design and make the pop-up structure as easy as possible to provide users with only the necessary information.
Choose the right time to display pop-ups to add value to your content.

Important: The option of adding a pop-up is available for Pro sites only.

Setting the pop-up triggers

There are different ways of making your pop-up appear on the live site. For instance, you can make your pop-up show seconds after the page loads, schedule pop-ups (e.g., after 30 seconds of being on a page), display pop-ups on page scroll or leave intent, or call for pop-up upon click on images, buttons, icons. Besides, you can show your pop-up only to a target audience.

Important: When a pop-up is automatically displayed to the visitor, this action is stored in the browser cookies. If the user deletes the browsing data, we will consider him/her as a new visitor and show a pop-up again. Make sure to change the pop-up frequency according to the Setting the pop-up frequency article.

To access these settings, hover over the block in editing mode and click on Pop-up settings:

... or click on the "gear" near the pop-up in the Pop-ups menu:

Navigate to the Triggers tab and set up the suitable trigger:

Tip: Each pop-up on your site is configured individually, the settings are not synchronized between them.

Don't forget to choose on what pages your pop-up will appear. For that, toggle on the Show on pages option and specify the needed pages in the Selected pages field:

Note: If you don't specify the pages, a window will pop up the first time a user visits any page on your site.

As your pop-up can have the full-screen width, we recommend enabling the Don't show on smaller screens option not to annoy your visitors:

Opening a pop-up after the page load

For that, enable the Show after the page load option in the Triggers tab:

If you want your pop-up to appear after a user spent some time on the page, hover over the Delay setting where you can set a timer for your pop-up:

Important: The maximum period for Delay is 300 seconds.

Opening a pop-up on page scroll

When you toggle on the Show on scroll option in the Triggers tab, a pop-up window will appear on the site when the user scrolls down through the page:

After that, the Scroll depth option will appear, where you can choose at which exact moment of scrolling the block will pop up — this parameter is measured in a percent.

Opening a pop-up on exit intent

To show a pop-up once the visitor is about to leave a site in the browser, toggle on the option Show on exit intent in the Triggers tab:

Opening a pop-up as a click action

In the editor, you can make the pop-up open when you click on a specific element like text or button. For example, after clicking on the "Contact Us" button, a block will open for the user to fill out the contact form.

To make the element clickable, click on it and navigate to its settings by clicking on the "gear" in the pop-up:

Tip: Learn more about setting other click actions for the elements in the Adding links to elements (click action) article.

In the new window navigate to the Action tab and select the Open Pop-up click action from the drop-down menu, then choose the needed pop-up:

Opening a pop-up to the target audience

With this option, you can set the target audience for your pop-up. This allows you to personalize current offers for each visitor and track the effectiveness of your ad campaign.

To filter the visitors, this trigger uses the UTM parameters — tags added to the URL of the current page or site with the information about the traffic source. This way, when the page is loading, the system analyzes the user's current UTM tags, and if these parameters are out of targeting, the pop-up will not be displayed for this visitor.

For example, you will be able to display the pop-up only if the user has entered your site from Google Adwords. In this case, the following URL will look like yourwebsite.com/?utm_source=google.

To set the targeting, navigate to the Triggers tab in the settings and toggle on the option Show to the target audience:

In the opened field click Add filter:

Choose the needed UTM parameter and add Value:

The available UTM parameters and their possible values:

UTM Source — this tag identifies the source of the traffic. For example, you can add the Google, Facebook, or any other name of the social platform you're promoting your site on.
UTM Campaign — the name of your ad campaign, used for the better distinction. The value for this tag can be the promo code, the slogan for your ad, etc.
UTM Term — a keyword in the search that leads the user to your site. The value of this field depends on the services you provide — for example, if you are developing websites, mention web design, websites, and so on in this field.
UTM Content — used to differentiate similar content or links within the same ad. For example, you can add text, banner, or article in the value for this tag.

Important: The tag value can be any text with a length of 1 to 100 characters.

There can be more than one parameter added to a pop-up — each of them will be used separately. For example, if you specified utm_source=google and utm_term=free, the pop-up window will be displayed if the user lands on the site from Google both by searching for the word "free" and without it (or vice versa).

Opening a pop-up on schedule

If you are running an ad campaign with the help of a pop-up, you can show it on schedule. You can set the date and time of the start and the end of the pop-up display. After the end time, the pop-up won't be shown automatically.

Note: The option of scheduling a pop-up display in advance is not yet available. In other words, the start date can be only today or tomorrow.

For that, toggle on the option Show on schedule in the Triggers tab:

Don't forget to set the start and the end date, the relevant time and the timezone:

Closing the pop-up

There are several ways to close a pop-up on a site. This way, you can add an element to the pop-up which will close the pop-up after you press on it — this option is commonly used for the buttons. For that, click on the button itself and open its settings by pressing the "gear" icon:

In the Action tab choose the Close Pop-up click action from the dropdown:

Don't forget to publish your site for the changes to appear live.

Note: If you want to combine some triggers for your pop-up, make sure to check whether they're going to work correctly in the Pop-up scenarios and limitations article.
