Connecting Hotjar (Contentsquare) to your website

Hotjar is a platform for analyzing user behavior on a website. It is part of the Contentsquare ecosystem and helps you understand how visitors interact with your content: which buttons they click, how they scroll through pages, and at which stages they encounter difficulties.

The service provides various analytics tools, such as heatmaps, user session recordings, surveys, and feedback forms.

In this guide, we’ll show you how to connect Hotjar to your website and start collecting data on user interactions.

Important: This feature is available only for websites with paid subscriptions.

If you're a new user

  1. Sign up or log in to your Contentsquare account.

Note: With a free subscription, your account can have only one active Project—in other words, one website to track. If you need to track multiple websites, you’ll need to either create separate accounts for each one or upgrade to a paid subscription, which allows your account to have up to three Projects at a time.

  1. In your account dashboard, go to the Get started section and copy the tag from the Tag installation section:

  1. Next, go to your website’s settings, the Third-party code section, and paste the code you copied earlier into the HEAD section:

  1. Click Save and publish the site to apply the changes.

  1. Done! To verify the connection, you can return to Contentsquare and click Verify installation: in the window that appears, enter the link to your site and click Verify installation again.

If you have a Hotjar account

Note: As of now, Hotjar is part of Contentsquare, and new user sign-ups take place there. This setup option is only suitable if you have an active Hotjar account created before the merger of these companies.

  1. Log in to your existing Hotjar account.

  1. Click on your profile icon and go to Organization settings:

  1. Open the Sites & Organizations section and click New site:

  1. In the window that opens, enter your site’s information and click Add site:

  1. After creating the site, click Install tracking code to go to the integration settings:

  1. Select the Install code manually connection method:

  1. Copy the unique Site ID from the new window:

  1. Go to the Analytics tab in your site’s settings and click the Hotjar tab, where you’ll paste the ID you received into the corresponding field:

  1. Click Connect and publish the site to apply the changes.

  1. Done! To verify the connection, you can return to Hotjar and click Verify installation in the section where you previously copied the ID: In the window that appears, paste the link to your website and click Verify installation again.

You should be redirected to a page listing the sites in your organization. Next to the site to which the analytics are connected, you’ll see a green indicator with the status Collecting data:
