Adding the API key to Google Maps

After you have added Google Maps to your Weblium site, make sure to retrieve and add Google API key. This key is essential for displaying the map on your live site.

Google Maps Platform offers a free $300 yearly credit for Maps. With the $300 yearly credit, the vast majority of customers find their use cases are completely free. After this credit has been used, you will be asked to upgrade your account to get unlimited access to all of Google Cloud Platform.

Step 1. Getting your API key



Go to Google Maps Platform and sign in or register by clicking on Get Started using your Google account.



If you are a new user



After registration, you will need to finish setting up your account by clicking on Finish account setup:



After that, you will be immediately offered to receive an API key, you can copy it at this stage and continue setting it up:



Next, you will need to configure the resources where your key can be used. To do this, first select the Website option in the drop-down list, and in the field that appears, enter the address of your website:



Important: If you change your domain, you will need to enter the new domain in the key settings, otherwise the key will not work. You can find instructions on how to edit the key in the next section of the article.

Done! That's it, you can always copy your key in the Keys & Credentials section:



If you already have an active account and key



You will need to authorize the key to work on your domain. To do this, open the key settings in the Keys & Credentials section:



Make sure that you have the Website option selected and add your new domain via the Add button:



Step 2. Enabling your Maps in the editor



Open the site's editor, hover over the map and click on the "gear" to access its Settings:



Paste the API key in the relevant field:



Publish your site for the changes to appear live.

Tip: it is highly recommend by Google to restrict your API key in order to provide added security and ensure only authorized requests are made with your API key. For more information on this topic, view Google Maps Platform guide.
